Quartz Welcomes New Audience Editor and Quartz Africa Reporter

Quartz editor in chief Katherine Bell has announced two new additions to the newsroom this summer: Ashley Webster, Quartz’s new audience editor, and Alexander Onukwue, a new Quartz Africa reporter.

Ashley Webster, Quartz Audience Editor

As an audience editor, Ashley Webster will develop new engagement tactics for Quartz on Twitter and Instagram, with an eye towards building the relationship between followers and Quartz journalists. Ashley will also experiment with social video, bringing Quartz Essentials to social platforms, as well as identifying and optimizing stories through search, including increasing the usefulness of the Quartz archive.

Previously, as a social media editor at Inc., Ashley spearheaded strategies for social media, digital partnerships, SEO, and evergreen content, and led promotion of virtual events, podcasts, and social video. Prior to that, she worked at The Tab and Time Out. She holds a BA in journalism with a specialty in graphic design (as well as a second major in peace, war, and defense) from the University of North Carolina. Ashley started in late July, reporting to Kira Bindrim, executive editor at Quartz. She is currently based in North Carolina.

Alexander Onukwue, Quartz Africa Reporter

Alexander Onukwue, a reporter based in Lagos, Nigeria, will be covering emerging industries across Africa for the Quartz Africa edition and Quartz Africa’s weekly newsletter.

Prior, Alex was a staff writer at TechCabal, where he covered fintech, venture capital, and the human impact of technology and digitization in Africa. His work has also been featured in Nigerian website YNaija. Alex holds a Bachelor’s degree in environmental technology from the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, and a masters in research and public policy from the University of Lagos. He speaks Igbo and English. Starting in August, Alex will report to Ciku Kimeria, Quartz Africa editor.
